FMA redesigned this former hardware store into a modern retail center with 14 retail shops and food services. The conversion involved opening up sections of the 1,700 square meter structure to provide an open and airy interior environment. A structural bay was removed to create a new steel and aluminum staircase connecting all four levels. The exterior of the building was also revamped with new glazing, entryways and fenestration to provide greater public appeal and contribute to the efforts to improve Gaborone’s mall area. Maintaining operations of existing retail spaces during construction was a major challenge. FMA worked closely with the retail operators to coordinate phasing and compact the schedule into the shortest possible time period.
